Remembrance Sunday 2024

The Armistice, an agreement to end the fighting of the First World War, began at 11am on 11 November 1918.

To this day, Armistice Day is marked around the United Kingdom with a two-minute silence at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month.

Remembrance Sunday is also marked each year, and usually falls on the second Sunday in November.

Below are some of the Remembrance Sunday events happening across Cambridgeshire on Sunday 10 November 2024:

Cambridge

  • Shortly before 11am, the Mayor, Councillor Baiju Thittala, will be part of a procession from Station Road to the war memorial on Hills Road, where a wreath will be laid.
  • Representatives of different organisations, including the Armed Forces and the Royal British Legion, will then take part in a commemorative service at the memorial.
  • At the same time, the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Dinah Pounds, will join a procession to the county, city and University of Cambridge’s annual service of remembrance at Great St Mary’s Church.
  • Both services will pause at 11am for two minutes’ silence.

IWM Duxford

  • At 11am, a two-minute silence will be observed at IWM Duxford to mark the end of the First World War and provide time to contemplate lives lost in war and conflict.
  • The Royal Anglian Regiment will hold a traditional Service of Remembrance followed by a two-minute silence and additional commemorative activity onsite.

Ely

  • A Service of Remembrance will take place in Ely Cathedral at 10.30am. Afterwards, there will be a march through Ely City, a parade, and an Act of Remembrance in the Market Square. The salute will be taken by the Lord Lieutenant.
  • Before the Service of Remembrance at Ely Cathedral, a parade will take place at the Porta Gate in Barton Square, which will consist of the Royal British Legion, including Veterans and Serving Personnel, the City of Ely Military Band, Standards, Various Uniformed Units, Cadet Forces and other youth organisations.

Huntingdon

  • Representatives from RAF Wyton will parade into the Market Square from the Princes Street entrance at 10.45am.
  • There will then be a service and wreath laying at the Thinking Soldier statue. 
  • The parade will then march along the High Street and St Mary’s Street.

St Ives

  • The Parade marches on at 10.25am from Station road, near Waitrose. From 10.45am the Act of Remembrance takes place on Market Hill, by the War Memorial.
  • The service will be Led by Rev Fr Mark Amey CF, Vicar of St Ives and Hon Chaplain to St Ives & District RBL.

St Neots

  • At 9.30am, a procession will begin from the Market Square, down the High Street, ending at St Neots Parish Church, where a short service will be held.
  • At 11am, the Act of Remembrance will be held at the War Memorial including a 2 minutes' silence.

Newmarket

  • A short service will be held at the War Memorial at 1.45pm before a Parade along the High Street to Tattersall’s.
  • The  annual Service of Remembrance will be held at Messrs. Tattersall’s Sales Ring at 2.45pm following the laying of wreaths at the War Memorial and a parade along the High Street to the Tattersall’s Sales Ring, led by the Parade Marshalls from the Newmarket Branch of the Royal British Legion.

Saffron Walden

  • The Mayor of Saffron Walden, Councillor Deryk Eke, will lead the Mayoral party for the Remembrance Day Parade and Church Service at St Mary’s Church.
  • The Service at the War Memorial and laying of wreaths will take place from 11am and thereafter, the party will proceed to St Mary’s Church for the Remembrance Day Service.

Haverhill

  • At 2.20pm, the Remembrance Parade will march through the town, made up of military personnel, public service representatives and war veterans. It will start from the Haverhill Arts Centre car park proceed along Helions Walk and Duddery Hill, and pause on the Market Square. It will then continue into the Withersfield Road cemetery.
  • At 3pm, the wreaths will be laid and the parade will return to Market Square.
