Two crews from Cambridge were called to a fire at a dry cleaners in the High Street.
Firefighters used a hose reel to extinguish the fire and returned to their station by 11.45pm.
Station Commander Martin Ockenden said the fire started inside an industrial tumble dryer, caused by a particular treatment process which caused spontaneous combustion inside the drum.
He said the fire was spotted by a member of the public who spotted smoke in the building and added: “We would advise all businesses like this, with a residential property above it, to make sure they have a robust risk assessment process in place.”
