Call to protect Cambridge orchard threatened by busway

An attempt has been made to protect an orchard threatened by plans for a new busway.

An application was submitted asking for a Tree Protection Order (TPO) to cover 12 Bramley apple trees in Coton Orchard, at risk from plans for a new busway between Cambourne and Cambridge.

The scheme has faced backlash over the years, particularly around building an off-road stretch through Coton Orchard, with some people arguing that an on-road option along Madingley Road should be pursued instead.

Councillors are due to meet on Wednesday 15 January 2025 to decide whether the TPO should be issued, and a public inquiry on the project is expected later this year.
