Cambridge mum to take on Subway® 5K to inspire healthy hearts

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the UK’s single biggest killer. Local heroes, such as Tanya Barrett, will be taking on the SUBWAY® Helping Hearts™ Family 5K Fun Run to raise money for the national charity Heart Research UK.

Tanya, 35, is running the Subway® 5K in memory of her stepfather, Martin Adams, who passed away aged-60. Following his heart attack in 2013, Martin’s health deteriorated and he sadly passed away on 14th April 2017.

Tanya has never done anything like this before, but has been inspired by Martin’s death to become more conscious of her own heart health. Her 11-year-old daughter, Megan-Jade, is keen to follow in her mum’s footsteps.

Tanya commented, “After Martin passed away I was motivated to try to get fitter and healthier, you don’t really think about heart problems until it happens to someone close to you. My daughter, Megan-Jade, now also wants to ‘run for Grandad’ which is great because she is keeping me company on the runs and we will keep each other going through the race.

The 5K series’ connection to Heart Research UK motivated Tanya to continue running and to spread awareness of heart health.

Tanya said, “I wasn’t planning on running a 5K as I’m only half way through the couch to 5K but when I saw this race, and its connection with Heart Research UK, I decided that I had to enter. I hope that we can raise lots of money for Heart Research UK and make a difference to people like my step-dad.”

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) causes 26% of all deaths in the UK, claiming about 435 lives per day. The early death rate (before the age of 75) from CVD in Cambridge is 68.5 per 100,000, lower than the UK average (70 per 100,000). However, the average early death rate from CVD for men in Cambridge is 98.1 per 100,000 – 146% higher than that of women (39.8 per 100,000).

CHD is responsible for 190 deaths each day in the United Kingdom and it is estimated that 2.3 million people are living with the condition.

The SUBWAY Helping Hearts™ Family 5K Fun Run takes place in Cambridge at Jesus Green on Sunday 18th June at 12.00pm. Once again staged in partnership with the national charity Heart Research UK, the series is part of the Subway® brand’s efforts to encourage families to live healthier and more active lifestyles together.

The 5K Fun Run features the unique and iconic ‘Field of Fresh!’ – 500m of GIANT INFLATABLES inspired by Subway® ingredients that participants will run through to get to the finish line.

The 5K runs are open to the whole family. You can choose to run, walk or even push your buggy around the course – everyone is welcome! Registration is FREE for under 12’s and costs £7 for those 12 years and over if you register before the event. Included within the registration fee, all participants will receive a FREE T-Shirt, a FREE Subway® lunch, a finisher’s medal and access to the Family Village!

All funds raised will be directly donated to Heart Research UK and the SUBWAY® Healthy Heart grant scheme, the latter an initiative providing up to £10,000 each to local projects throughout the UK that actively promote heart health in the community.
