Cambridge Rugby Club is holding an Inner Warrior Camp this weekend for girls aged 11-18 to give the game a go - completely free of charge. The event will take place at Cambridge Rugby Club on Grantchester Road, Cambridge from 11am to 1pm.
Cambridge Rugby Club is hosting the event as part of English RFU’s Inner Warrior programme - a national initiative designed to get more girls and ladies interested and involved in rugby.
Inner Warrior Camps are a fun-packed, commitment-free way for girls to get outside, get muddy and experience the dynamic, exhilarating sport of rugby for the first time.
At the Cambridge Inner Warrior Camp there will be plenty of friendly faces and trained coaches to help girls that want to try rugby for the very first time or learn more about the club game. Participants will be introduced to the basics of the game – including passing, kicking and tackling, coupled with enjoyable fitness routines. Attendees will also be able to meet some of the 50+ girls, who already play rugby for Cambridge Rugby Club’s under 13s, under 15s, and under 18s ‘Rubies’ teams.
Commenting, John Creighton, Chair of Mini and Youth Rugby at Cambridge Rugby Club, said: “With more than 18,000 girls and women regularly playing rugby across England, the game has never been more popular. At Cambridge Rugby Club, our girls’ teams are growing in size and stature - regularly taking on teams from other towns across the East of England. Just last weekend, our Rubies were at a rugby development festival in Diss, where they won several games. This Saturday’s Inner Warrior Camp is a great way for more girls across Cambridge and the surrounding area to give this popular sport a go.”
Cate Dyble, Chair of Girls and Ladies Rugby at Cambridge Rugby Club, said: “I am firm believer that rugby is for everyone - regardless of shape, size or gender. Through the Cambridge Rubies we’re creating a hub for anyone that wants to play, try, support, socialise or just be involved in women’s rugby. Cambridge Rugby Club has thrown its full support behind this initiative and I’ve been overwhelmed by the number of people actively contributing to the development of our girls’ teams - providing training, finance and administrative support. Our Inner Warrior Camp is the perfect opportunity for more girls to come and try rugby and see what fun it is. I think all the girls currently playing for the Cambridge Rubies would tell you that signing up is one of the best things they’ve done!”
After the Inner Warrior Camp, attendees (and their parents) are invited to stay and watch Cambridge Rugby Club take on Plymouth Albion - free of charge. The match kicks off at 2:00pm.
