Figures suggest two thirds of new undergraduates have been educated in this way.
Around one in four of those beginning degrees this year are from under-represented and disadvantaged backgrounds.
But school leaders are warning there's still a "long way to go" in improving representation.
The figures from University administrators show that the 2019-20 student body will consist of 68% of undergraduates from state schools - but it still remains unrepresentative of entrants to UK university courses overall; over the last five years, around nine in ten students undertaking higher education have come from the state sector.
