EAST CAMBRIDGESHIRE DISTRICT COUNCIL PREPARES FOR RECYCLING WEEK

East Cambridgeshire District Council is encouraging residents to be mind full of their recycling habits between the 25th of September and the 1st of October for National Recycling Week.

Staff from the Council’s Waste Services will be available to discuss the importance of recycling during Recycling Week on Tuesday 26th September at Ely Library from 2pm to 4pm and Thursday 28th September at Ely Market 8.30am to 3-30pm.

Recycle Now have devised the campaign to make people more aware of how to incoperate habits in to their daily routine to make recycling everyday objects easier.

Councillor Julia Huffer, waste services delivery champion for East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “As a council we are always keen to improve our recycling rates – and National Recycling Week is an excellent way to highlight the importance of recycling”.

In the UK, almost 90% of packaging is recycled in our kitchens, while just over half (52%) of items are recycled in the bathroom. New research from Recycle Now found that nearly half (49%) of the UK population admit to not always recycling their aerosols including deodorant and hairspray from the bedroom or bathroom. The research also found that over a third (38%) of the UK population say they don’t always recycle glass items in the bedroom such as aftershave and perfume bottles after they are empty.

Recycle Now have released their top bathroom recycling tips to help encourage more people to make recycling a part of their daily routine:

• Where possible empty and rinse containers before they go in the recycling bin.

• Put caps and lids back on your glass containers before recycling.

• Remove plastic lids and caps from air-freshener, deodorant and shaving foam aerosols where easy to do so and place separately in the recycling

• Mirrors and nail varnish bottles are not recyclable and should be put in your general waste.

Residents will also have the chance to meet the district’s recycling superhero, Michael Recycle at the Soham Pumpkin Fair on 30th September between 1:30pm and 5:00pm.
