Peterborough Cathedral is launching an urgent fundraising appeal.
The Cathedral needs to raise £300,000 by the end of March 2025.
Star Radio understands without the funds, it may no longer be able to keep its doors open seven days a week to welcome visitors, host events, or provide a space for prayer and reflection.
The annual running costs now exceed £2 million, making community support essential to the Cathedral’s survival.
There are fears if it was forced to close, it could also have a significant impact on the footfall in Peterborough city centre and impact on already struggling businesses.
Thousands of people visit the building each year for worship, education, and community gatherings, playing a vital role in city life and drawing visitors who energize our local economy.
The appeal will raise funds to support various areas, including:
- Maintaining worship and musical programmes that uplift and inspire.
- Continuing educational initiatives that nurture the next generation.
- Carrying out essential repairs to protect this irreplaceable landmark.
- With stable finances, the Cathedral can also look to enhance the interior of the building and continue to improve the experience for all who visit.
The Very Reverend Christopher Dalliston, Dean of Peterborough Cathedral:
"This Cathedral has been at the heart of Peterborough and the diocese for nearly 1,400 years. It belongs to everyone in this city and beyond.
"We urgently need your support to keep its doors open and ensure it remains a place of inspiration and sanctuary for all."
