Two crews from Cambridge were called to a flat fire in Akeman Street.
A man had to be evacuated from the flat after a fire in the kitchen left the ground-floor flat smoke-logged.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel and a jet to extinguish the fire and returned to their station by 9.04pm.
A male casualty suffering from smoke inhalation was left in the care of ambulance staff.
Watch Commander Tony Burton said: “Please remember to keep cooker tops clear and don’t use them to store things on ever.”
