Hoteliers reject £2 nightly tourist tax in Cambridge

Plans for a £2 nightly visitor level in Cambridge have been rejected.

Under the proposals, visitors staying overnight in Cambridge hotels with 10 rooms or more, would've been charged £2 per room per night.

Cambridge City Council and the Cambridge Business Improvement District (BID) said the money would help to create a new funding pot for investment in the city.

The charge could only be introduced if it was supported by over half of the hotel owners, but when the scheme went to ballet, it was rejected by 16 votes to six.

Maria Manion, from Cambridge BID, told Star Radio the rejection was a shock:

Cambridge and the surrounding area attracts nearly 8 million visitors a year, according to Cambridge Visit.

A city council report suggests, before the pandemic, more than 1 million stayed overnight and Cambridge had more than 6 million day trippers.

The same report said footfall in the first quarter of 2023 exceeded pre-covid level, with 10 per cent of workers directly employed in tourism.
