Cambridgeshire marks Remembrance weekend

Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday will be marked across Cambridgeshire.

The Armistice, an agreement to end the fighting of the First World War, began at 11am on 11 November 1918.

To this day, Armistice Day is marked around the United Kingdom with a two-minute silence at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month.

Remembrance Sunday is also marked each year, and usually falls on the second Sunday in November.

Below are some of the Remembrance Sunday events happening across Cambridgeshire:

Cambridge

  • Shortly before 11am, a procession will leave Station Road to the war memorial on Hills Road, where a wreath will be laid. Representatives of different organisations, including the Armed Forces and the Royal British Legion, will then take part in a commemorative service at the memorial.
  • At the same time, a procession will leave for the University of Cambridge’s annual service of remembrance at Great St Mary’s Church on market square.
  • Both services will pause at 11am for two minutes' silence. 

IWM Duxford

  • At 11am, a two-minute silence will be observed at IWM Duxford
  • The Royal Anglian Regiment will hold a traditional Service of Remembrance
  • A flypast and poppy drop over Duxford's historic airfield will then take place by the world's only flying example of a Bristol Blenheim

Ely

  • At 10am, a short march will set off from The Porta Gate, down The Gallery and to the Cathedral.
  • A service in the Cathedral will begin at 10.30am and include a two minutes' silence at 11am and a spectacular Poppy fall from the Lantern Tower.
  • At 11.15am, the City of Ely Military Band, Standards and marching contingents will parade from Ely Cathedral via The Gallery, Minster Place and the High Street to the Market Place for the wreath laying service at the Ely War Memorial.

Newmarket

  • At 1.45pm, a wreath-laying ceremony and a two minutes' silence will be held at the War Memorial, followed by the parade along the High Street and to Tattersalls for the service.

Haverhill

  • At 2.20pm, the Remembrance Parade will march through the town, made up of military personnel, public service representatives and war veterans.
  • It will be lead by Bury St Edmunds Sea Cadet band, and will start on Duddery Hill, proceed along the High Street and Queen Street to the cemetery and War Memorial on Withersfield Road. 
  • At 3pm, the wreaths will be laid and the parade will return to Market Square.

Huntingdon

  • RAF Wyton will parade into the Market Square from the Princes Street entrance. 
  • There will then be a service and wreath laying at the Thinking Soldier statue. 
  • The parade will then march along the High Street and St Mary’s Street.

St Neots

  • At 9.30am, a procession will begin from the Market Square, down the High Street, ending at St Neots Parish Church, where a short service will be held.
  • At 11am, the Act of Remembrance will be held at the War Memorial including a 2 minutes' silence.

Earlier this week, four World War One memorials in Cambridgeshire were granted Grade II listed status.
