Dimitar Mitov has left big, studded boots to fill. So let's introduce you to Cambridge's new Goal Keeper.
Cambridge United have just announced their first signing of the summer, a new number 1 called Jack Stevens. No stranger to League One football, Jack has made no fewer than 92 appearances in the last three seasons - all for the club he's spent his entire professional career with. Oxford United.
Jack actually started with Chelsea and Barnet, who would eventually reject him due to his lack of height. At the age of 16 (and, by then, over 6ft) he was signed by Oxford United - and the rest is history.
So, is he excited about joining Cambridge United?
“I am really excited. It’s good to get it over the line. “It’s a good time for me to settle somewhere, hopefully play regular football and be somewhere really positive. “It feels like it fits and I am really happy to be here. I know the league really well and I am looking to show everyone how good of a goalkeeper I am.”
What does Cambridge United manager Mark Bonner think of his first signing of the campaign?
“Jack’s personality and hunger impressed me when we met, and having watched plenty of him and seen how highly thought of he has been, we are signing him at the right to time to provide him with the environment and opportunities to keep progressing.
“He’s quick around the goal and off his line, deals well with crosses, is a strong shot stopper and shows composure with the ball.”
And who should Cambridge United be playing in their first game of the 2023/4 season? Oxford United at the Abbey Stadium.
It just had to be.
Welcome to Cambridge, Jack.
