Launch of Mayoral precept bus routes delayed

Plans for 7 new bus routes funded by the Mayoral tax precept have been delayed.

The Combined Authority is funding 53 bus services across Cambridgeshire, thanks to a new council tax charge, which equates to £36 for Band D homes.

Mayor Dr Nik Johnson, who heads up the Combined Authority, said the "vast majority" of the routes are already up and running.

However, the tendering process for 7 of the routes must now start again, which means they may not be operating until May 2025.

The routes affected:

  • Tiger 1 - Huntingdon to Cambridge
  • Tiger 2 & 3 - Cambridge North and South connections
  • Tiger 4 & 5 - Soham to Cambridge and Newmarket to Cambridge
  • Tiger 7 - Chatteris to Wisbech
  • Tiger 9 - Peterborough Orbital

The Combined Authority said a bus operator, which could not named for "legal reasons", had withdrawn winning bids for the routes.

But, Stagecoach East, which has confirmed it was the operator in question, said the decision to retender the routes had been taken by the Combined Authority.
