Concerns have been raised about water supply in Cambridge and its risk to the environment.
The Environment Agency, Ofwat, and the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) have sent a joint letter to Cambridge Water, calling for "immediate action".
Cambridge Water supplies around 350,000 homes, and plans for huge housing growth in the region could see that number rise significantly in the coming years.
The letter "highlighted serious concerns" about Cambridge Water’s security of supply, and the risk to the environment.
It also told the company to improve its performance around forecasting and reporting leaks, and increasing meter penetration.
A spokesperson for Cambridge Water said it had "the largest leakage reductions in the sector" and had plans to fit all non-household properties with smart meters.
A full response from Cambridge Water is expected later in November 2024.
