£5.6 million works to turn St Ives Park & Ride into a Smart Energy Grid have been unveiled.
Solar canopies and electric vehicle charging points have been installed, and these will generate renewable electricity to power the site and feed into the local grid.
Cambridgeshire County Council has said "the project will pay for itself" with revenue from energy creation, and create revenue for to help fund council services.
The currently closed section of car park is planned to reopen in September 2024, while the electric vehicle charging points will be up and running by November 2024.
The St Ives Park & Ride Smart Energy Grid will start with up to 10 electric vehicle charging points, which will be powered by the solar canopies.
There is provision for up to 100 EV charging points on the site, and as demand for EV charging increases, more will be installed.
CCTV has also been put in place, to improve security and discourage anti-social behaviour.
