Three engines from Cambridge and Sawston and the command support unit from Huntingdon, together with a fourth engine from Suffolk, were called to a fire at the Ocean Dragon Chinese takeaway in Campkin Road.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reels, two covering jets and two CO2 extinguishers to extinguish the fire and returned to their stations by 3.14pm.
Two people were evacuated from the flats above the takeaway along with about 20 members of staff and public from the next door Tesco Express and two or three people from a neighbouring council property.
Station Commander Jamie Johnson said: "There were a lot of members of the public present and the crews worked really well in a rapidly developing fire.
"We'd like to thank people for assisting us in getting out of the risk area quickly."
Crews set up a safety cordon around the area and used thermal imaging cameras to look for fire hot spots in neighbouring properties, including roof spaces.
The cause of the fire is now under investigation.
