Contractors will be working overnight and weekends in July to complete the roundabout on Fendon Road and Queen Edith's Way.
Once completed, cyclists will be given their own cycle path, in a contrasting red surface, to give them equal priority with pedestrians over oncoming motorists. Pedestrians will have zebra crossings on all four entry and exit roads, and at crossing points over the cycle paths. The roundabout has also been designed to encourage motorists to drive at a slower speed.
The final activity to complete the scheme will start on Thursday 16th July and is expected to be completed at the end of July.
The upcoming works and closures are:
Thursday 16 to Friday 17 July - daytime surfacing work will be carried out with no road closure required
Saturday 18 July to Sunday 19 July – a total closure of the roundabout will be required between 7.30am (18 July) and 6am (20 July) to construct centre islands
Monday 20 July to Friday 24 July – the roundabout will be closed overnight between 7pm and 6am for resurfacing works, to paint road markings, install signage and belisha beacons
Sunday 26 July - the roundabout will be closed between 7.30am and 10pm for red cycleway surfacing and road markings
From Monday 27 July - Queen Edith’s Way west arm will remain closed to reinstall double yellow lines between Fendon Road and Hills Roads. The double yellow lines on Nightingale Avenue will be removed and the ‘No Left Turn’ ban on Queen Edith’s Way junction with Hills Road will be reinstated.
The existing roundabout was perceived by many people to be dangerous to cycle around, and residents also reported feeling unsafe when walking in the area due to a lack of pedestrian crossings.
