There’s a warning that rail passengers travelling between Ely and Norwich could face higher fares under the new East Midlands Rail Franchise.
The Competition and Markets authority’s investigating the award of the East Midlands rail franchise to Abellio – who already run Greater Anglia rail which already covers trains in Ely.
The CMA’s called on Abellio bosses to offer guarantees that passengers won’t suffer as a result of reduced competition before the new franchise begins next month.
Joel Bamford, Senior Director of Mergers at the CMA, said: “Thousands of people rely on this route, so it’s crucial that passengers don’t suffer as a result of reduced competition.
"We look forward to hearing from Abellio about how they will seek to overcome these concerns.”
