Warning to drivers over seven-day A10 closure

The A10 will be closed at Foxton for level crossing road deck and worn-out track maintenance.

It'll be shut from 10pm on Tuesday 24 December until 6am on Wednesday 1 January 2025.

There will be a signposted diversion for motorists travelling on the A10 between Royston and Cambridge while Foxton level crossing is closed. The diversion route will direct drivers onto the A505 between Royston and Duxford and the A1301 between Duxford and Trumpington.

During the closure, engineers will be installing a new, heavy-duty road deck at Foxton level crossing. The pedestrian crossing decks are being replaced at the same time, and will be closed over Christmas alongside the vehicle crossing. Network Rail will be running a fully-accessible minibus for pedestrians who want to cross the railway.

Teams will also be replacing the rails through the level crossing, as well as 615 metres of track and four sets of points in the area.

Intensive road and rail use means that the current level crossing and the nearby track is in poor condition, with train services having to be slowed down because of speed restrictions to keep everyone safe.

Simon Milburn, infrastructure director for Network Rail Anglia:

“We’re really sorry for the disruption, but we need extended access to the level crossing to get this vital job done, and the roads and railways are typically quieter in the period between Christmas and new year.

"Once installed, the new level crossing decks and track will serve motorists, pedestrians and rail passengers for many years to come.”

The works near Foxton, along with the continuing construction of Cambridge South station and the latest stage of a major signalling upgrade, mean that there will be changes to rail services in the area for up to 12 days over Christmas.

The A10 is also planned to be closed at Foxton at the following times:

Thursday 2 January, from 00:01 to 06:00
Friday 3 January, from 00:01 to 06:00
Sunday 5 January, from 00:01 to 06:00
Saturday 11 January at 02:00 to Sunday 12 January at 02:00
Saturday 15 February at 02:00 to Sunday 16 February at 02:00
